jay-z-when-the-money-goes Hot 97 up here in NYC played a new Jay-Z track today and everyone has been going crazy. This is the first CD quality version I have come across, the rest were rips off of the radio that I don't want to post. The song is alright, I don't hate it but I certainly do not love it. I think it is hard for me to wrap my head around this song because Jay-Z is talking about when his money will no longer be there, which judging by the picture above will never happen for him anytime soon haha. That picture gets me everytime on google image search.
John Forte and Talib go in over Kanye's track "Homecoming". Big ups to John Forte, the record producer and rapper who is most famous for his work with the Fugees, he recently was released from jail on a presidential pardon by none other than George Bush, now just let that sink in a little bit. At least his whole presidecy wasn't a waste, before that happened there wasn't a single thing I could point to to prove there was something in his presidency that was actually worth doing. Presidential pardons are some of the coolest and weirdest things ever invented being able to grant freedom with no second guessing or ability to appeal, now I wonder if Bush found a way to pardon himself for the tragedy that was his presidency?
Drake rounds up some big names for the remix to "Unstoppable" and the beat by Diplo is very interesting. Weezy hops on a verse and uses the AutoTune again when no one else on the song uses one. The beat is out there and not in a bad way, I don't dislike it at all but there is a lot going on. Drake has a dope verse at the beginning to...in fact I need to listen to this again, I think I need to get over Weezy's AutoTune when I listen this time haha.
overdose-freebass808-com The Apple Juice Kid and Geechi Suede of Camp Lo are Freebass 808 and dropped this gem off to Ill Roots over the weekend. I was fortunate enough to hear several songs by these guys a while back and the things they are doing are dope. This song has a retro feel to it with the old school horn stabs, percussion, and the voice loop, it definitely has that 80s feeling to me. Also would love to see these guys perform again, they played in Brooklyn about a year ago with the Cool Kids and it was a great show, Geechie Suede on the mic and Apple Juice Kid rocking out on the drum set.
nasa-the-mayor-_ft-the-cool-kids_-ghostface-killah_-scarface-_-dj-am I was telling someone recently that this album is the exact direction I want to see hip-hop follow. Spirit of the Apollo draws from lots of different musical influences each track is custom tailored to fit their eclectic list of featured artists. I am definitely buying this album when it drops. Don't forget to click the break either because over the weekend we also got the video and mp3 for another single called "Hip Hop" featuring KRS-One, Slim Kid Tre & Fat Lip, it is a feel good track and I can't stop playing it since I first heard it. I am posting the video and MP3 because I saw a lot of videos taken down over the weekend. N.A.S.A. ft. Fat Lip, Slim Kid Tre & KRS-One - "Hip Hop" nasa-ft-slim-kid-tre_-fatlip-and-krs-one-hip-hop
Finally, a video or really just anything form the Cool Kids. I don't really understand why they are making a video for this song well over 6 months after it came out, you would think they would've made this video early last summer, kind of like Wale and "Nike Boots" except that was close to 2 years after I first heard it. Also what is the deal with their album? I'm sure they will say it will be released soon and have it pushed back and pushed back like every other artist. Either way I am going to have to take the Cool Kids off of the most anticipated albums section, they haven't been doing much of anything lately and that usually is a good indicator that the album is nowhere near ready.
kig-ft-wale Wale takes a song the beat by a group called K.I.G. in the UK and does his thing on the beat. I will admit, the first few seconds when I heard the beat I thought "Oh no, this beat is too much like dance/electronic/techno music, there is no way this will be good," but it was interesting to hear a rapper ride this beat. Thanks to Mark Ronson, Wale stays up on the UK music scene in general and has picked some great UK dance records to jump on like this and Justice's "D.A.N.C.E.". Oh and for those who don't know, Wale and DJ Semtex ended what could go down as the quickest beef ever.
