Archive for May, 2009Props to RR for bringing it back with this video and I think it is safe to say “bringing it back” now that this performance is 10 years old (apparently the dude in the comments section says it is ’06, I don’t know or really care, it’s a dope video). The crowd was feeling UGK, I love how at the end when UGK exits the crowd bursts into an unprompted UGK chant. This performance was good too, I don’t remember any other BET performance that had that kind of energy, but then again it isn’t everyday that Jay-Z and UGK graced their stage. I was also glad to see Pimp C (R.I.P.) rhyming too, I say it all the time but no one can ride a beat like Pimp C did, he is practically singing his rapped verses. What a great collaboration and live performance, everyone should watch this clip. Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. I was wondering what happened to Theo, apparently he added Martins as his last name and has been working on his album according to Kevin Nottingham. This is the lead single from his upcoming album Do You Know Theo? which I guess should be coming out soon if he is dropping singles. The beat is banging and that has to be Christian on the hook for him to get the feature credit too. Theo isn’t someone I was always up on but this single definitely gets me curious to see what else he has in store for us on the album. No download link for this one, sorry. I know I’m a little late on this but you know what I say, the good music has to be heard. This is a new track from Nipsey and I have to assume it is from his upcoming mixtape Bullets Ain’t Got No Names: Vol. 3. A Notorious sample is used for the “diamonds on my neck” chorus and Nipsey goes hard on the beat. I try to keep putting up as much West Coast stuff as I am feeling but still feel very under exposed to the whole scene, but I stay trying. I do know one thing though and that is almost all of Nipsey’s tracks have been on point so far so I am definitely copping this mixtape when it drops. Get the download below the break. Yeah you read that crazy title right, it was really weird typing it out. Whatever, we finally get a very brief preview of Detox thanks to him teaming up with Dr. Pepper.
I’m really pissed I haven’t made it to one of these yet. Here is what OkayPlayer had to say about their video.
Check The Roots out on Tuesday in NYC at Highline Ballroom for their next Jam session. Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Nando remixes Santigold’s song “Starstruck” very nicely and talks about my favorite food in the world, Maryland crabs (see above). Sike, he actually is talking about being a crab in a bucket which I’m sure a lot of other cities can relate to outside of the DMV, none of the music makes it out because people tear each other apart before it even has the opportunity. For those wondering this will NOT be on the new Nando mixtape coming out sometime soon but I am really enjoying the individual songs he keeps releasing that didn’t quite make the cut. Alright now I got to go eat because I am hungry as poop after talking about crabs. Oh and ha ha ha to all of the UNoriginal people who immediately thought of an STD joke, ever since I went to college and mention crabs to people not from my area everyone turns into a freaking comedian and thinks they have a funny one liner, really, you’re not the first person to think of it and you’re not that funny. Boom, roasted. A 4th video in a row? Sure, why not. We haven’t had anything from Jake One on here for a minute and per usual he gets a gang of rappers to spit over his dope beats. In this video Jake is repping hard for his hometown of Seattle, not a place that when I think about it I think hip-hop but he is changing my perception on it. He gets a bunch of guys to put it down for his city and even gets the original Seattle rapper, Sir Mix A Lot, and the Seahawks’ Nate Burleson to come out for the video too. Conceptually the video is real simple but really all you need is shots of the city for a song repping your hometown and I like the BBQ scene at the end too, it seems like something you might see on a normal day in Seattle. Back to back videos with Kanye in it but this one is more on target with the theme of the song. I have no idea what those glasses are that The-Dream is wearing but they were very interesting, I couldn’t stop staring at them every time he hit the screen haha. Hype Williams directs the video and it doesn’t do too much for me. Man, I must be on some video hater medicine or something because it’s taken a lot to impress me these days. I like this song a lot though, a lot of the AutoTune tracks have been my recent favorites of the few pop hip-hop and R&B songs that I keep in my rotation, like this and “All the Above”. Love vs. Money album in stores now. Talk about a waste of a video and song, am I the only one who doesn’t get this? This video was a humongous waste of money for a 4th or 5th single off of an album put out months ago but I guess that is the desperate state of the industry. Nothing about this video screams great to me, Rihanna half naked? Please, I saw the naked pics a couple weeks ago, this is nothing. The only thing great about this is the beat and the exposure for Mr. Hudson, besides that there isn’t much in this that is original and this really makes me happy that I didn’t buy this album. Even when I don’t like Kanye I usually appreciate that he is pushing hip-hop in new directions but that isn’t even the case this time, instead I want those couple minutes back from watching that video. Go ahead slam me for it, I can already feel it coming, but I am interested to know what, if anything, people find interesting about this video. UPDATE: This isn’t the real video per Kanye and his blog, check out the stills below. Shouts to TheRapUp for the story. Beastie Boys teamed up with the Roots after they talked to Jimmy Fallon to do a rendition of “So What’cha Want” and it is quality true old school hip-hop. The Roots really improve any live performance, I was curious to see how they would handle this beat and as usual they nailed it. It was a big day for the Beasties yesterday too because they announced the title for their 8th studio album (7th with lyrics) will be Hot Sauce Committee. As Jimmy said check them out at a festival near you this summer, I still haven’t seen them live because their show in DC back in 2000 got cancelled because Mike D messed up his shoulder, FML…and writing a date 9 years ago makes me feel old.
