Although largely overlooked in the new wave of young artists flooding the industry, Nipsey Hussle is a good young talent who, along with Jay Rock, are the most promising rappers to take the reigns from aging stars (Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, The Game, etc.) and lead the West Coast into the future; and, as many would argue, make the West prevalent again.  Since signing with Epic in ’08, Nipsey has released a plethora of singles and mixtapes (mostly from the Bullets Ain’t Got No Name series) but has never set a release date for his much anticipated debut album, South Central State of Mind, until recently (now set to be released on October 19th).

With Nipsey himself naming “Feelin’ Myself” as the first official single for the album, it seems as though the date is fairly definite; and rightly so as the track gives listeners a great “first” taste of what Nips has to offer.   1500 or Nothin provides a banger of a beat that mixes hard synth(clap) rifs with a heavy bass drop that appeals to modern, mainstream listeners, but has an old school West feel to it at the same time (a formula Nipsey has used on the majority of his previous releases, check out “Army All By Myself”, “C.E.O.”, and “Fastlane Youngstas”), which Nipsey absolutely crushes.  Enlisting his classic West Coast flow and formula, Nipsey commands the mic and delivers a cocky yet confident performance that touches on his difficult upbringing in South Central LA and flashes at his haters and doubters. Nips leads into the Lloyd chorus perfectly, who then does what he does best: provide a catchy, R&B hook that gets stuck in people’s heads and that brings the track into the upper echelons of the mainstream (“Bedrock” or “Any Girl” anyone?).  ”Feelin Myself” brings a lot to the table and, I believe, could act as the first step in making Nipsey Hussle into the household name (atleast in the hip-hop world) he deserves.
