Chris Faust – Faust Album
May 17
under: mixtape
comments: 0

I have been waiting for this mixtape for well over a year and it is almost surreal that it actually dropped today.

Songwriter and emcee Chris Faust has hooked up with DJBooth.net and 2DopeBoyz.com to bring fans his latest street release, the FAUST LP. The project features 17 fresh cuts from the underground up-and-comer, including reader-approved leaks “So Long,” “Maybe Now Begins,” and “As You Like It.” Joining Faust throughout the set are Ibe, Mike Maven, Sunny Jones, Rocki Evans, Outasight, Cocoa Sarai, Capri, Krystal Eversley, Kris Kasanova and Carras Paton. Production comes courtesy of Ibe, Tristate, 6th Sense, 2 Thumbs Up and Clyde and Harry.

For those unfamiliar, Faust is the rapper formerly known as Print and you can catch up on his previous release Comic Books Unlimited here. Grab this album and tracklist below the break courtesy of DJBooth.

Oddisee ft. Tranqill – “City Life” (Video)

“City Life” represents why I roll with Oddisee, the dude just doesn’t make bad beats or songs. It also highlights his ability to make some soulful beats that are some of the most quality ones out right now.  He rarely takes cues from the synthesized garbage on your Z100 stations and his beats exude life and soul behind them while he paints an audible landscape for you. Yeah, I sound like I am going overboard with this but I am making an effort to reinsert some emotion behind this blog myself. Oddisee’s Odd Seasons album is dropping on May 17th and you can grab your pre-orders now here.

Shawn Chrystopher – You And Only You Album

It must be Hanukkah today because the presents keep on coming and I know it isn’t Christmas. B.o.B unveiled his new project and now we get Shawn’s latest album which I have missed several leaks for but have been anticipating for some time now. The spitter from Inglewood hits us with his most polished album/tape to date and I fully expect him to be meeting with the labels after this project goes viral. Shawn uses an interesting approach for this release too, you can download it for free or buy the album by using the same link and there is also a VIP pack album available for all the hardcore fans out there. There have been other artists to use similar tactics (think Radiohead’s In Rainbows) but I can’t remember of a rapper using a similar method from the day it was released and it will be interesting to see how it does because of it. You should also check out the digital booklet, it is one of the things that is becoming lost due the rise of the MP3 and this one deserves some appreciation. The tracklist and download links are both below the break.

Michael Jackson – “Breaking News”
November 8
under: Songs

I’m not sure how I feel about this song, on one hand it is new MJ but on the other there has to be a reason that it was never released. The vocals are somewhat suspect in that there are parts that sound like MJ and parts that certainly don’t and I’m not sure if they brought a sound-alike person to come in and record those parts? The song also sounds somewhat dated and I would’ve been very interested to see if this was something that could’ve helped him score a new hot single after a number of years of decline or if it would’ve gone unnoticed in the sea of MJ smashes? You can form your own opinion about it by listening to the song below the break and there is a link to pre-order the album.

Chromeo – Business Casual (Ablum Stream)
September 10

NPR does it again with another album stream that gives me a way to make my day go by faster.

Chromeo, the duo of Patrick Gemayel (a.k.a. P-Thugg) and David Macklovitch (a.k.a. Dave 1), boldly embraces ’80s-style electro-funk. The two began working together in high school, originally focusing on hip-hop, but since their 2004 debut (She’s in Control), they’ve energized dance floors worldwide. Their latest release, Business Casual, takes a sophisticated approach to their glossy sound and finds earnest pop ballads coexisting alongside club bangers.

Though some audiences may label tunes steeped in four-on-the-floor disco beats as cheesy, Chromeo’s tightly crafted songs display rare talent. Business Casual showcases some of the best pop sounds of the ’80s, a decade that’s often the brunt of musical mockery. But Chromeo unabashedly invites listeners to a big, bright, neon-lit dance floor, and there’s never anything wrong with that.

Everybody get your DeLorean’s and flux capacitors ready to transport you back to the 80′s for this one. Now if only we could get those Marty McFly boots

The Get By – “Lift Off” (Video)

The Get By is a trio made up of 2 rappers and 1 DJ: Mantis, Justis & Pangea Delphi. Their aim as a group (which you can read about on their bio here) is to fight against the segregation between the undergound heads and the mainstream fans by making music that everyone will feel. Not only is this a great philosophy, but it’s good business too since they’re not shunning any group of hip-hop heads. I don’t see what’s so wrong with liking both ends either, while on the topic. I have my copy of Thank Me Later right beside King Geedorah’s Take Me To Your Leader, and there’s no unwritten rule that says I can’t be into both. But I digress. “Lift Off” shows both emcees bringing quality rhymes to a beat that just exudes natural, classic hip-hop coolness with the horns, steady drums, and scratches in the outro. The video is a simple tour-of-my-city concept, which was filmed actually pretty close to where I live. Follow the link above for The Get By’s website, and click here to download their album sampler.

Andre 3000 – “I Do” [No Tags]

And what better way to start the week than with some new 3 Stacks? I usually try to stay clear of tagged-up joints and wait for the NoDJ/CDQ versions to post, but for Andre I’ll make an exception EDIT: tag-free up (that was quick). This will be off of an upcoming Evil Empire mixtape entitled Limelight Exclusives, out Thursday. “I Do” is a womanizing track that might remind you of “Int’l Players Anthem”, and it’s a niche that Andre 3000 is more than comfortable in. The beat is big and soulful, which again is reminiscent of the aforementioned OutKast/UGK collabo. Although there’s no point in holding your breath for an official album until more solid news gets out, it’s a safe bet that Andre will most definitely deliver, especially after Big Boi knocked it out of the park with Sir Lucious Left Foot.

Classified – Choose Your Own Adventure
August 3

Class continues to push his latest album, Self-Explanatory, with a video series to complement the Choose Your Own Adventure game he had on the album. I think it’s hilarious that he took this concept from a children’s game and ran with it, plus it provided Classified a chance to give his supporting cast of local emcees some time on his album. This is the first video, aka the start of the adventure, and you can make your choice for where to go next at the end. You can play the game from here, but it’s hosted on classifiedadventure.com, where you can find an iTunes link to Self-Explanatory.

Kanye West – Acapella Verses x “Good Ass Job” No Longer Album Title

I’ve been posting very sporadically as of late and that’s been because of a summer course I’ve been taking (music composition…I’ve been doing it for a while now but any new experience is a good one). The only thing that matters here though is that I have some catching up to do so let’s get down to it. This post is essentially the one-stop shop for all things Kanye-related that happened in roughly the last 24 hours. That might not seem like much but within a day, he previewed verses off of his new album at a Facebook conference and a Twitter conference and they’re big ones. Even though they were previewed acapella, they still sound fiery, especially the verse he spit from “Chain Heavy” (in the video above). Mr. West also got himself a Twitter account – a future source of many intriguing comments no doubt – and promptly announced that Good Ass Job as a title was no more. So all in all, some great news from the source of G.O.O.D. Music. Remainder of the videos after the jump.

Japanese Cartoon – In The Jaws Of The Lords Of Death
July 16
under: Felipe, album

Going by the picture and the album title, you would think that this was some sort of metalcore project. Of course though that is not the case since this is the free album of Lupe’s side project, Japanese Cartoon. The key clever point about this project that alot of rappers seem to fail to understand is that it’s a free fringe project. More power to people like Kanye and Lil Wayne for attempting to step out of their comfort zone with 808s and Rebirth respectively, but in this day and age where giving music away for free has become a core part of any marketing strategy, I feel that you should leave your best material for the store shelves and your musings for the blogs. According to Confusion over at Pigeons and Planes (B&B and P&P…ha), Lupe does a pretty good job on this so I say download away. Download link and a message from Lupe Fiasco after the jump.
