I’m a day late and a dollar short on this one but I’m digging it so it gets a late post on B&B. I have heard this song before without Bobby Ray on it but I guess this is the finished version to it with him on the chorus. The beat by Jim Jonsin has a bouncing piano loop which makes the artists sound like they are enjoying weaving their rhymes over the simplicity of it. No word if this from any project but it seems to me that it will be another one off. Download: J. Cole ft. B.o.B – “Pass Me By” (Prod. Jim Jonsin)
This is a pleasant surprise to have in your inbox when you wake up in the morning. I knew this joint was coming out but I have been all over the place the past several days and I completely forgot about it. No Genre is the mixtape that features “BeastMode” and a bunch of other jams with producers JR Rotem, Jim Jonsin, Quincy Jones and several others all contributing to the project. Check out the tracklist and download link below the break. “BeastMode” is a song I had never heard before but I like that Bobby Ray leads with a video for it as my introduction. B.o.B goes innnnnnnn on this one rapping with a passion and conviction that was often missing from his album The Adventures of Bobby Ray. It is good news too because at the beginning of the video he announces he will be releasing a new tape on December 7th called No Genre and you know we have all been missing the mixtape B.o.B. That isn’t a knock on his album either but there are definitely some songs from prior tapes which were better than a few of the tracks on it. As for the video it is some simple backstage footage but you can sense the intensity in his voice and actions. Enjoy! Update: Now with song download link. Download: B.o.B. – “BeastMode” What a cool ass concept that wasn’t too hard to creats but still makes it look like the video had great special effects.
This also happens to be one of my favorite tracks from the album.
Lupe gives his last single over to the newly formed All City Chess Club which is about as close as we got to a modern day Wu Tang. Lupe, Asher Roth, Charles Hamilton, The Cool Kids, Blu, Diggy, B.o.B. and Dosage are all members of “the club” and I am down with all of them except for Charles but I can put up with a verse if it means I get to hear all the rest on a track. The remix goes on for over 8 minutes, which isn’t hard to imagine when trying to fit so many artists on a song, but Lupe has the best verse on his own joint although I got to give props to Asher for also bringing it on the first verse. I don’t know if an album would work for these guys but I am all for them doing dope ass remixes to songs mixtape style and there are so many different kinds of artists on here that there should be something for everyone. After watching this video I now understand that magic doesn’t mean the ability to do a trick and deceive someone but it happens when you sleepwalk and get chicks, who knew? Rivers, the lead singer from Weezer, joins B.o.B for the very radio friendly chorus and helps with the mainstream attractiveness for this song (which isn’t always a bad thing). I’m a big Weezer fan so his addition is welcome and it helps that Rivers has learned how to make a catchy pop tune over the years even though many have criticized him for it. B.o.B’s album The Adventures of Bobby Ray is in stores now and is one of my favorite releases of the year so get your hands on it if you can. Who says rappers aren’t musicians? I wish I could play videos like this for those who hate on rap, you can’t deny the musicality and his ability to sing and rap better than most people. Despite his talent I did recently have tickets to see him at Irving Plaza and had to leave before he even performed due to the thousands of drunk 16 years olds in the crowd but I plan to see him the next time around to make up for it. There is a lot of great music to sift through for this Unplugged episode and instead of putting the singles up top I will post “Don’t Let Me Fall” since it is one of the underrated songs but “The Kids” which flows into MGMT’s “Kids” is probably my favorite. Get the rest of the videos below the break and there are quite a few. Let’s state the obvious with this video, it really needed Cee-Lo and B.o.B in it. It comes off as cheap without them in there due to them both contributing heavily to this hit song. The video has some splices of Bruno playing various instruments for different shots and is well done but lacks cohesion with the message of the tune. As for the song, if you haven’t heard it yet it seems to be almost an assured smash. The only thing I see possibly hindering it is an overkill of B.o.B and Bruno collaborations due to “Nothing On You” but I still think the different vibe on this one will make it unique enough for fans to like it. “The Other Side” is certainly a pop hit but the catchy chorus always gets me and it is hard to deny it.
“She Can Get It” dropped on the world wide web yesterday and nobody can seem to place it although there is a DJ drop during the song so I am going to assume it is from his upcoming tape. It sounds polished and finished and further displays B.o.B’s ability to rap about subjects that have been beaten into the ground in rap and still make it sound original. The chorus is catchy and I was nodding my head the whole time to the upbeat vibe and liked the touch of the guitar loop. Lookout for this unnamed taped dropping at an unknown time by whatever the name is of the DJ on the tape haha. Download: B.o.B – “She Can Get It” Damn, I really wish this was “Airplanes Pt. 2″ with Eminem but the song itself is still a good one. The video focuses on some shots of B.o.B with massive screens around him displaying all sorts of colors and images. It actually reminded a lot of the screen behind Massive Attack when they play their live show, which I recently had the opportunity to see for myself, and force you to watch it instead of the band. Hayley Williams and someone who looked like Jim Jonsin to me make appearances in the video although the main focus is Bobby Ray and his rapping. B.o.B’s album The Adventures of Bobby Ray is in stores now and I reiterate that it is one of my favorite albums to be released in a long time.
