Unlike the majority of the people I have talked to, I was not personally a fan of Man On the Moon: The End of Day. Yeah it was an interesting album, one that encompassed a style that I had not heard in rap before, or at least in mainstream rap; but I felt Kid Cudi was working too much towards the abstract or extremities of rap (more towards pop), even more than Kanye had tried to test rap’s boundaries previously. While I liked “Day n Nite,” I saw that as more of a concept track (much like a concept car): something that is made as a sign of innovation but is not made into a legitimate product release and is certainly not a model for the norm. I was looking for more of the “Make Her Say” style track, heavily based on sample, a strong bass-line, and Cudi just straight spittin’ fire, but instead I got tracks like “Pursuit of Happiness” which were just simply too different from the heart of rap (the model that had made me fall in love with rap). So, as a result, I was not waiting on the edge of my seat for the release of Man On the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager… Sue me. Read the rest of this entry »
Yes we know the first time we posted “Fuck You” that it was technically a video but this is the official one instead of just the lyrics. Let me state too that this has quickly jumped to one of my top songs, if not the top song, of this year for me and most certainly will be my jam for several months. The video compliments the song and although we all have been in similar situations that Cee-Lo describes in his lyrics the video has a happy ending. Watch for yourself and lookout for his new album called Lady Killer which releases December 7th in the U.S.
We have all been in the situation that Cee-Lo describes in this song but now we have an anthem (if you didn’t like the Lily Allen song) to sing whenever you want to tell someone “Fuck You!” This song is a great Friday song because it is a good song anyways and it puts a smile on your face. The chorus is hysterical but Cee-Lo also has great lines in other parts of the song too but you will see that as you listen/watch. I will say there is a lot of profanity so if you’re at work I wouldn’t blast this even though you will want to. The video is nothing more than the lyrics to the song however it is effective because you want to hear every word that Cee-Lo sings. Enjoy this one for the rest of the weekend because I will be blasting it.
Let’s state the obvious with this video, it really needed Cee-Lo and B.o.B in it. It comes off as cheap without them in there due to them both contributing heavily to this hit song. The video has some splices of Bruno playing various instruments for different shots and is well done but lacks cohesion with the message of the tune. As for the song, if you haven’t heard it yet it seems to be almost an assured smash. The only thing I see possibly hindering it is an overkill of B.o.B and Bruno collaborations due to “Nothing On You” but I still think the different vibe on this one will make it unique enough for fans to like it. “The Other Side” is certainly a pop hit but the catchy chorus always gets me and it is hard to deny it.
Again I like to make sure everyone knows that this is not safe for work. There is nudity and I know at my job they wouldn’t take to kindly to me watching boobs at work. Cee-Lo takes on the Band of Horses song “No One’s Gonna Love You” which he undoubtedly sprinkles with his own unique style. The video is good too and it isn’t just throwing nakedness at you as shock value but incorporates it more in the storyline. This song will be the UK bonus track for his upcoming LP Lady Killer so all our friends across the pond will have first legal access to the mp3.
I’m not a fan of these kind of multi-posts since it means not being able to give as much attention to each song/piece of news, but this will save my ass time-wise so here you go.
First order of business is some good news by way of Toronto singer/rapper/songwriter/producer, k-os. After several albums, he will be dropping his first mixtape, The Anchorman Mixtape, July 23rd. Word is the tape will be for the most part strictly spitting, and there will be a Drake collabo on it. Let’s hope this tape won’t go the way of Jay Electronica’s Act II or Ski Beatz’s 24 Hour Karate School. Spotted @ CityOnMyBack.
New music from Big Boi, Diggy, Cee-Lo and Wale after the jump.
This video seems like it is really late since his album Universal Mind Control dropped so long ago but I still like the original concept. It isn’t close to my favorite Common song but I enjoyed the positivity of the track and also hearing two artists I respect immensely linking up. I’m sure some people will not like the song because it is a little bit cheesy but I appreciate the new directions Common attempts to incorporate in his raps and the fact that he doesn’t feel the need to make typical rap songs all day. I know Common is working on a new album titled The Believer but I am not sure when he plans to release it but I hope it is soon.
Cee-Lo, Travis McCoy, Janelle Monae, Patrick Stump of Fallout Boy & Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco team up for this cross genre star studded song. This song was a part of a Coca Cola ad campaign but now is a dope video too. It definitely is meant to put you in a good mood and if you aren’t after hearing this you may have no heart. The video is pretty crazy too and the best I can describe it is Cee-Lo is your zebra-striped tour guide of Oz lol. Click the break for the video and an instant pick me up.
