As part of Billboard’s Monday Mashup series, pop-punk band The Maine cover Outkast’s “Roses”. It’s not uncommon nowadays to find accoustic/band covers of songs across many genres, but The Maine do this song justice and take the cover beyond just a cliché. They bring a Southern rock vibe to “Roses”, thanks in large part to the lead singer’s twangy vocals. The great thing about these slowed down covers of hit songs is that even though you might have heard the song a billion times, you’re able to better appreciate the poetry in the lyricism. I’m not big on pop-punk so I’ll take a pass on The Maine, but props for this rendition of a modern-day classic.

Time to take a little bit of a different spin for B&B and post some Beck. I recently saw a question that asked a blogger if his site was about hip-hop or just stuff he likes and that is fair question. For B&B, I think we focus predominantly on hip-hop but also try to filter down the other genres we listen to because we like them and hope you do too. With that said, this song has been floating around the music sites the past few weeks and over the weekend was my first opportunity to check it out and it is impressive. I never thought I would like an INXS song but this one is well written and has a 60’s sound to it that reminds me of Pearl Jam covering “Last Kiss” in the late 90’s. Beck himself only plays guitar while Annie Clark of St. Vincent takes over the vocals with her voice which is reminiscent of Norah Jones. Check the song out for yourself and if you’re feeling it Beck has been posting a lot of these videos online for you to check out here, enjoy!
I was trying not to post this video so soon but you can thank my computer for messing up and not wanting to play any audio tracks for it. Mayer Hawthorne is one of my favorite new artists (which isn’t shocking to anyone who reads this site regularly) but these very slow ballads aren’t up to par with his more up-tempo jams. The effort is a solid one though and the song isn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination but I think he is better served singing in his falsetto for songs at this tempo. This song was recorded to commemorate his tour coming to an end on April 15th in SF and the song will be available via an exclusive pack featuring a t-shirt and a heart shaped USB with this song on it.
Well, I went to the Mayer Hawthorne show in NYC at Webster Hall last night so it is only appropriate I post his cover of “Thin Moon”. Mayer throws his soulful singing and band backing behind the song and as with everything he does I like it a lot. Side note, if you bring friends to a Mayer Hawthorne concert I suggest you fill them in with the music they are going to encounter and the scene that will make it out to the show. I went with a few friends who all didn’t know the music and needless to say they were shocked that me (a hip-hop head) were dragging them to a white guy with thick glasses singing Motown music lol. I recommend the live show for all the fans out there and if you follow the site you should be one by now.

I normally try to stay away from the album artwork posts unless they are 1) a huge artist or 2) some cool ass artwork and thankfully this one fills both those criterion. That isn’t even mentioning the fact that this is easily the most anticipated album of the year. Regardless of what you think of his first single on the album, you have to admit this cover is dope, it reminds me of one of those pictures from the 90’s where if you stare at it long enough a picture pops out at you haha. It would’ve been nice to have gotten a tracklist with this but judging by how close to the vest they played the first single I wasn’t really expecting it. The album drops May 19th.
