We told you this tape was coming and it still blindsided us here at B&B faster than we expected. We have been very supportive of Darren for a few years now (and vice versa) and with each passing tape it gets more fun to see how he has evolved as an artist while still staying a cool ass person. I feel like a broken record saying that this is his best work to date, since I say it for almost every one, but that should speak volumes to his drive and refusing to allow his career and talent to stagnate. Go below the break and give the tape a listen and support indie artists who are on their grind and positively contributing to this way of life we call hip-hop. Both the download and streaming link are below. Read the rest of this entry »
Darren hit me up with this joint the other night and it has been stuck in my head ever since. “Higher” has a dreamier aspect to it with a slow, rolling piano loop and sung chorus which, despite the title, serves as more than a call to smoke weed. At B&B we have chronicled his career from the beginning, which would be his Darkside of the Moon days, and with every tape and song he shows constant improvement. Darren continues to polish his lyrics and production (although this is produced by YB & JZ) with each single seemingly more radio and mainstream ready than the last while still maintaining his skills on the mic and carving his own niche. Big ups to our homie DH and be sure to cop his latest tape on July 1st. Shouts to PatIsDope for the download link. Download: Darren Hanible – “Higher” The kid keeps coming with the fire and this makes me want to go listen to his Doghouse tape again. “Closure” is a quick video that has Darren contemplating the end of a relationship on campus in the courtyard by himself. Darren looks cold as hell too, I was getting cold watching it and made me want to turn the heat up. The improvement Darren has shown is noticeable from project to project and Doghouse is his best work yet and gets the B&B stamp so give it a listen and you won’t be disappointed. We’re back from hiatus and conveniently so is my man Darren who unleashed this on us during our absence. “Mite Not Be” originally debuted on his Daft Punk inspired tape called Bliss but he found a way to sneak it in on his latest project called The Doghouse and I’m loving it. It is one of my favorite joints he has done to date and the video complements his story of him kicking some game to a nice little chica. All the DH fans (and those interested in new, dope music) should go download The Doghouse, it is easily my favorite project of his and the dude is sorely underrated.
Darren is back with a new tape and we didn’t even get the chance to promote it properly on B&B until now. The Bowie State student returns with a group of songs that are mostly original although there are a couple remixes thrown in there for good measure. I am going through the tape as I type and Darren has continued to grow and polish his skills and songs while further defining his sound with strong production from him and a couple from Jonny Juliano. The download link and tracklist are below the break.
Man…I have been slacking the past few months and have missed on several releases by my man Darren so it is time to make up for it. This single is called “Comin’ Back” and is from his upcoming Doghouse project which drops on February 1st of next year and it is produced by his frequent collaborator of late, Jonny Juliano. The beat has a little bit of a West Coast vibe to it with the reverb heavy synths and the bouncing melodies that defined the sound in the 90s. As a bonus I am adding the “Veterans Day” and “Start It Up” freestyles also below the break. Listen to the whole trifecta to gear up for Doghouse and to catch yourselves up with his latest offerings. Darren shot this over the other day and I’m glad to see some of the young uns getting back to freestyling on the street. Some of my first distinct hip-hop memories were kicking it while one of our boys freestyled his ass off for anyone who would listen and he got damn good at it too. For this one it looks like Darren is outside of a show somewhere in the District and decided to kick it for the cameras one time and he killed it. I would like to see more artists freestyling for real but I figure you all know that since I sound like an old man shaking his fist when I often go on rants about it.
“In My Zone” is Darren’s most polished song he has released to date and here is what he had to say about it.
Darren’s new project G.P.A. will be hitting your eardrums sometime later this year. Download: Darren Hanible – “In My Zone”
Our homie Darren Hanible drops his latest tape with remixes from songs predominantly from the 90s on a short mixtape before he drops his next project called GPA. Darren borrows from the likes of Ice Cube, House of Pain and Missy and it brought me back to a time when I was just getting into hip-hop and Darren was just being born, WTF?!?! He continues to improve with every project and this should get you wanting more original tracks with the next release. Grab the tracklist and download link below the break and check out his previous mixtape Bliss! I was complaining about new artists not giving the freestyle the proper respect the other day and then Darren hit me with these ones to show not all is lost. The video above is only a mere 9 minutes and I say that because below the break Darren laced us with a 17 minute opus. He doesn’t Drake these freestyles either, you can actually tell they are not the prewritten bullshit that everyone tries to pass off as “freestyles” now. Darren struggles for words at times and tries to keep it as cohesive as possible which is rare these days, even for artists coming up, and demonstrates their authenticity. Anyways check them out for yourselves and remember that there are people out there who still can freestyle.
