Donny Goines – “Larva” (Rehit)

Donny continues his mixtape series of spitting over instrumentals of popular songs while giving them his own style and perspective and this time he remixes Eminem’s “Going Through Changes” off of Recovery. Although I normally do not like the traditional mixtape style, Donny is at his best when he gets personal with his story and delivers some introspective verses and he did just that for “Larva”. I also admit I am partial to the Black Sabbath sample since they were an early influence on my taste in rock and were one of the first classic heavy rock bands I listened to. I’m not sure how long this “rehits” series will last but I do hope he puts them all on a tape at the end of it.

Donny Goines – “Rap For ‘Em”

“Rap For ‘Em” is the start of an interesting concept for this nest series of songs by Donny because it  is supposedly a freestyle that is rapped in song format. I honestly don’t believe many people “freestyle” for real anymore and unless it sounds like a true one (some pauses, often rambling verses etc.) I don’t believe that this is straight off the dome. For this one Donny goes in over a Jay-Z beat and it will be cool to see what other instrumentals he picks for the series. There isn’t any indication of the placement of this track but I would assume if he is releasing several of these that at some point they would make their way onto a mixtape but who knows.

This song dropped today on DJ Quiz’s Quiz Knows A Mixtape project and Statik has already taken the liberty to unleash a no DJ version. The beat is soulful as hell with a bluesy guitar during the verses and a slightly sped up chorus that Donny adds his verses which go well with the overall message. Statik is someone who I have become a big fan of over the past several years for his ability to keep his ear to the new cats and his beats which are good enough for both popular and underground artists. On top of placing songs on other people’s mixtapes Donny also recently released his mixtape 20X which you can get by clicking on the link.

Donny cuts loose the visuals for his M-Phazes produced track from his recent EP called 20X. I’m not completely sure what it is about the video but I was feeling the way it was shot. The individual scenes themselves are simple but the way the shots follow the groove of the song and the originality of some of them (like the boxing scene) make this video a half step above what most unsigned rappers put out now. Go click on the EP and download it because despite its length it still features some of my favorite producers in the game.

Donny Goines 20x Cover

Some new Donny Goines to marinate in your eardrums and this new policy of not being able to download things at work is killing me. Donny gets some of my favorite producers with M-Phazes, Apple Juice Kid, DJ Static & 6th Sense all contributing beats to the short project. There is only one feature and Donny is shining the spotlight on himself with this and I wouldn’t be shocked to see this catapult him further in his career. I haven’t gotten around to posting much  (if anything) from the project and since it is so dope I am gonna post the video of him explaining all the songs below the break along with the download and tracklist.

The latest song from Donny has him going in over this crazy M-Phazes beat. I have never heard him go as hard as he does in this song (and not in a fake way either) and it is cool to see him leave his inhibitions behind for it. As I said too, the M-Phazes beat is crazy and I can’t think of another beat that even reminds me of it. “No Apologies” is off of Donny’s newest project Rocksmith Tokyo & Donny Goines Presents 20X which this is the first I have heard from it and color me impressed.

It’s been a while since we had Donny up here but it is time to change that. He was asked to remix this by MySpace/Paramount who are creating this movie and it is great to see him making some moves. It is no secret anymore that one way to supplement the declining sales of albums is to partner up with corporations to fund songs and help with exposure, similar to what Mountain Dew’s new music label is currently doing. Also if you are in town on the 30th hit up Donny’s show because that is another way people can supplement their income lol, check out the flyer above.

Donny Goines Marquee

I have been meaning to get this up for a while now and recently have been inundated with all things Donny Goines so I am going to consolidate them all into one post (sorry Donny haha). To start off, I was at his show last week and got to see him headline at the Blender Theater and it was a dope. The highlights for me personally were P.SO, Poison Pen and Donny closing it out. Above is a picture I took of the marquee because I thought it was cool as hell to see his name up there and below the break is a video with snippets of songs from his set and if you look closely you can see me in some of the shots. If you don’t know who I am or what I look like well maybe someday you will get the honor (lol jk, for real I am a humble dude). Also below the break there is a performance with him and Nyle at Pianos this past week and and interview to get to know him better. I had a lot of ground to cover and now you know why this is called just The Donny Goines Post!

Donny Goines ft. Izza Kizza – “She Likes” (Video) (Prod. Apple Juice Kid)

Donny unleashes a video for this song off of his free album The Breakfast Club. The beat is by the Apple Juice Kid and is smooth, I don’t know what it is but I have been feeling the smooth AJK beats lately like this and the bonus track “Afterglow” from the Freebass 808 mixfilm Moonbass. The video, directed by Court Dunn, keeps it simple with 3 shots at all times and a rotating cast of Donny, Izza and some lovely ladies. Click the album name above to download it if you haven’t already, I am still playing tracks from it. Shouts to 2DBz for the vid.

This song is off of the upcoming Numonics album titled Being Cool Doesn’t Pay the Bills and I am loving that name. The beat is pretty chill and I am not up on Numonics but will definitely have to give the album a listen. You know it’s all love over here for Donny but this is the first time I have given QuESt a good listen and he was alright. His flow was was pretty good and he switched it up well but I couldn’t get a good feel for him with just one verse, I will have to listen to more of his stuff to get a idea for his style. I have been looking for when this album will be released and can’t find it anywhere so I will keep looking and update if I figure it out soon.
