Gucci Mane ft. Swizz Beatz – “Gucci Time”

I have never been a big Gucci fan, mostly because I do not feel he has much skill as a lyricist and relies too much on good production and beat packages to carry the track.  For this entry, I am not looking as closely at Gucci’s performance as I am at Swizz Beatz’s production and the current trend of incorporating techno/electronic samples or concepts in a hip-hop beat.  With rappers today working with European club DJ’s (like Tiësto’s production of Three 6 Mafia’s club banger “Feel It”) and, at one point, 50 Cent (once proclaimed as the last “gangster” rapper) sampling European club music on tour in preparation for making his next album, Black Magic, a techno based, conceptual rap album (although he has since decided to not cross the barrier but rather just make a “classic 50″ album).

Yelawolf – “Lemonade” Freestyle

Alabama’s own goes in on Bangladesh’s only beat the Bangladesh-produced “Lemonade”. I get it if a producer wants to establish his own distinct sound, but the only thing distinct about Bangladesh seems to be that he really, really, really, really loves “A Milli”. Yelawolf delivers yet again with his rapid-fire flow and is showing even more signs of improvement, just in time for his album Trunk Muzik: 0-60. I’m pretty sure Corey mentioned this previously, but this guy is one of those leading the way for the new-school of the South, so like him or not, be prepared to hear more from Yelawolf in the near future.

Gucci Mane – “Poltergeist” feat. Talib Kweli

Yes, that just happened. For all of you who have uttered the phrase, “Now I’ve seen everything,” this is life’s way of fucking with you. It’s not like Gucci has suddenly undergone a lyrical rebirth either, so don’t get your hopes up. I honestly have been sitting here for the last ten minutes trying to think of new ways to describe how bad this song is. Between its torturous slow pace, the mastermind lyrics of Gucci, and what seems to be an attempt on Talib’s part at a Southern flow, I could hate on this for pages. This being Gucci Mane though, I was secretly hoping this song would be about this kind of poltergeist, which would have been all kinds of hilarious.

If this video is playing choppy for you, try the youtube version after the jump.

This being yet another slow day, it’s only right we play a little catch-up. Before you skip this post for seeing Gucci Mane in the header, hold up because this is actually really good. For those who don’t know, this song is off of the ever-elusive Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, which might finally drop in the next four months (fingers crossed). With the exception of the freestyle in the Wal-Mart, this video is pretty standard, but its that simplicity that gets you to focus on the song and realize how well Big Boi’s flow rides over the beat. Gucci, who surprised me by really delivering on this, is of course M.I.A. being in jail and all. Shouts to RR.

The weather is getting colder, shopping malls are getting crowded, and families are coming together…that’s right, it’s recap month! Everyone with an opinion is preparing best-of and worst-of lists left, right, and centre, and so it’s only natural that B&B gets into the spirit of the season. Throughout the month, I’ll be taking a look back at highlights in hip-hop in 2009 and in the decade as a whole (I don’t know what Corey will do, so in order to distinguish opinions, I’ll continue to put my name in the tags section of my posts). Read what I have to say about Trey Songz’s magnum opus, “LOL Smiley Face” (Remix) after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

3 new Drake joints today. The first one is “Say Something”, which is actually Timbaland’s track and is likely to be off of Shock Value 2. The last two are just your average loose tracks from seemingly nowhere floating around on the blogs. “Believe It Or Not” is nothing special (by nothing special I mean it features Gucci Mane), and “King Leon” is pretty dope with its Arabian-sounding beat, but with only one verse, it seems unfinished. “Say Something” is definitely the stand-out track of the three, so if you’re going to download any of these, get that song for sure. Shouts to cityonmyback, which shouts out for this post 2DBz, which shouts out for this post DJ Neptune lol. Listen to “Believe It Or Not” and “King Leon” and download the three tracks after the jump.

Update: Link for the full version of “Say Something” is now up.

Hello ignorant rap, meet conscious rap, and congratulations on fucking it all up! If Gucci Mane is really on this song on Attention: Deficit than I am seriously boycotting this bullshit. Yeah I said it, I am boycotting the album of one of the artists I support the most and always have since the beginning of this site. Gucci Mane is someone that it is very hard for me to support because of his rhymes not relating to me or being very good. I could go on forever on this site about how garbage Gucci Mane’s raps are but instead of trying to convince you through words, I will just post a video of him “freestyling” below the break. This will pretty much dead any conversation of why he is on a Wale song because the “freestyle” is so bad it speaks for itself. And just for fun, this is the first freestyle video I could find, it isn’t even the one I was thinking of but it still serves the purpose well. I’m praying this is an unofficial remix and that I have to eat my words.
