Wiz has been hitting the internet hard with mass releasing (or leaking?) material in preparation for the release of Rolling Papers (March 29th), most recently releasing his official mixtape Cabin Fever. Cabin Fever (while containing old tracks, like the title track “Cabin Fever”) is heavily experimental, both featuring artists that don’t typically fit into the Wiz Khalifa collaborative ring and producers who don’t usually fit into the laidback, “high” production style that fits Wiz’s rhymes. However, especially with “Gang Bang,” Wiz succeeds in showing that he can (every once in a while) go outside of his comfort zone and still make quality music that his fans like.
Although I was skeptical of him signing back with WMG/Atlantic Records, Wiz Khalifa has definitely assuaged my fears through this release. While his usual thematic references to weed (his lyrical comfort zone) do not absolutely dominate the track, as it has on the majority of his mixtapes and releases since “Say Yeah”, Wiz kills his bars with talk of “big ballin” in a way that shows moderate lyrical maturity and diversity (in a sense) and does not detract from the classic Wiz flow and delivery that he is known for and we all love. With the help of a crazy Stargate beat that features heavy bass, clap-back, and key-bells as the base, Wiz makes his presence known through his strong commandment of the mic and speedy delivery and flow (which he seemingly speeds up to fit the intense key background). While I previously criticized (but accepted because he is the man) his monotonous approach to the game/lyrical content, Wiz has grown since his last major release and even from Kush & Orange Juice for that matter. This track acts as an indicator that Wiz is here to stay and that he is not just an underground sensation. Wiz is the real deal, and I look forward to the album which is slated for an early 2011 release.
