Mos Def – Quiet Dog Bite Hard

Ah, the best song category. Even though my choices were limited to hip-hop, I had a nearly impossible time compiling this list and selecting a victor. In the end, I narrowed the short-list down to the songs that got progressively better with each listen and chose the winner from that. “Quiet Dog Bite Hard” might not grab your attention in your first listen. Like me, you might ignore this song for months before giving it another chance. As you give it that second chance, then a third, a fourth and so on, you begin to realize that “Quiet Dog Bite Hard” is an addicting song. It’s lively, up-tempo bounce puts you in a good mood and the beat that drives this feeling is hard to dislike. The Latin flair in the instrumental feels more rhythmic and energetic than any standard hip-hop beat from this year. The quiet “simmer down” hook accentuates the high-energy verses, making the balance in this song on point. Party song or not, Mos Def delivers with some tight lyrics and his flow is just as rhythmic as the beat. “Quiet Dog Bite Hard” is not the best song of 2009 because it draws you in on the first listen; rather, it’s the best song because it retains your interest for many more listens to come.

The Recap: Music Video Of The Year

Eminem: 3 AM (directed by Syndrome)

If there is one field that hip-hop lags behind in comparison to other genres, it’s music videos. We’re all aware that the phrase “hip-hop music video” has become synonymous with many negative stereotypes, but more and more, rappers have been breaking free from this mould. Eminem is just too batshit crazy to fit into that mould, and so when news spread that the video for the single “3 AM” was going to be premiered on cable-access Cinemax, interest was piqued. Directed by Syndrome, this music video captures the demented terror of the song thanks to its settings, its lighting (which may not seem like a big deal but is absolutely spot-on), and its overall mood. On top of that, Em portrayed the character in the song incredibly, as is proven in the scene where he is sitting in the bathtub of blood and only his eyes are visible. After watching this mini horror movie, you can see why it deserved to be premiered on a channel like Cinemax.

I have been posting a lot of pop lately which is pretty uncharacteristic of me but honestly there has been a lot to post. This song has to go up for it being two of the hottest pop stars right now collaborating on a sure to be hit. “Telephone” is also off the 8 song album Fame Monster that Gaga is releasing on Nov. 23rd for $8 along with “Dance in the Dark”. Her idea of releasing 8 original tracks instead of adding them to a re-release of her album The Fame is brilliant and more pop artists should take note of it.

Is Lady Gaga the new Madonna? It is too early to tell as of right now but this particular joint reminded me a lot of her for the obvious reason of the talking part in the middle of it. This song is also one of her deepest too because it is supposed to represent “marginalized women in abusive relationships”, according to Luis at PMA, and I respect the effort to incorporate an important message into a top 40 hit. Everyone has been going crazy lately for her and I do give her credit for writing some incredible pop hits, and yes she actually does most of her own writing too. You can get her 8 song album called The Fame Monster on Nov. 24th.

We finally get the video for “Chillin” but still no Back to the Feature mixtape although it is rumored to be coming out next week. I’m really not feeling this video, I’m not really sure what the overall point or theme is and Lady Gaga seems kind of lost like they weren’t sure what do with her in the video. Honestly, the best part for me was seeing the sneakers in the background, the Bape hoody he wears and all the other fresh gear in the video and I also like seeing him rep DC though with shots of Cardozo HS, Ben’s Chili Bowl and more. Anyways, catch Wale, XO, and Tabi Bonney tonight at the 9:30 club in DC tonight, that show should be crazy. Check below the break for a bonus track also released today called “Family Affair”.

DMV stand up! I listened over the internet to WKYS in D.C. while this debuted live and it was good to hear all the love Wale was getting and to hear him encouraging new artists in the DMV. This is a radio rip but I have been waiting for this forever so it has to go up. There was an earlier internet version leaked that wasn’t even close to finished and without most of the Lady Gaga parts but this one is the real deal (plus tags haha). Whenever we get the CDQ version you know we will throw it up here so stay tuned. Also his mixtape with 9th Wonder, Back to the Feature, drops on April 29th so be sure to cop it.

EDIT: Just got the CD quality version, hit up the link to download the untagged version.
