Well, I went to the Mayer Hawthorne show in NYC at Webster Hall last night so it is only appropriate I post his cover of “Thin Moon”. Mayer throws his soulful singing and band backing behind the song and as with everything he does I like it a lot. Side note, if you bring friends to a Mayer Hawthorne concert I suggest you fill them in with the music they are going to encounter and the scene that will make it out to the show. I went with a few friends who all didn’t know the music and needless to say they were shocked that me (a hip-hop head) were dragging them to a white guy with thick glasses singing Motown music lol. I recommend the live show for all the fans out there and if you follow the site you should be one by now.

Mayer is back with a video for one of my favorite songs from his album A Strange Arrangement. That album is a must get if you listen to anything I have to say about music, it was one of the dopest of last year across all genres. For the video Mayer is fittingly walking down a street in LA while it pours on only him because we all know it rarely actually rains there. Also as I pointed out in my album review linked above, this is not a cover of the Temptations song of the same name although it incorporates the Motown sound and covers the same subject matter.
Congrats to Mayer on reaching another stepping stone in his career by starting to play the late night circuit, I hope this helps blow him up even more. Everyone on the underground has been on this and so have a bunch artists and the guy has been touring extensively to promote himself. The album itself, A Strange Arrangement, is one of my favorites of last year and if you like the old school, Motown sound then you will be into it. Anyone know if he is coming to Webster Hall on March 4th? I saw somewhere that he was but it isn’t on their calendar and I need to see him at some point this year.
Mayer Hawthorne’s album, A Strange Arrangement, one of my top 5 albums of 2009 and this is his third single from it. Instead of the video focusing solely on a green-eyed girl, Mayer instead sips a glass of absinthe in the beginning and then goes on a psychedelic trip. Different colored girls fold in and out of one another and the bathroom walls even sing for him and it is a very original concept especially since it would’ve been so easy to make the song solely about a girl. Get his album now on iTunes!
As you all know Mayer Hawthorne’s A Strange Arrangement is one of my favorite albums right now and possibly of the year. He is currently on a nation wide tour selling out everywhere and recently caught up with Ruby Hornet for a great interview letting you know where he, Buff1 and 14kt have come from. You also get to hear some of the songs throughout which should further solidify your want/need to go buy this album. In case you haven’t heard, check out our review of it here.
Let’s see, where do I even begin with this album? Since I do not do album reviews often I usually only do them on albums I like and I have been bumping this non-stop the past couple weeks. He single-handedly is attempting to bring back the Motown/oldies sound and is making it hot again. I really think Mayer Hawthorne will be that dude in the near future or is right now, you know the one everyone is talking about and if you haven’t heard of him you feel like you aren’t cool anymore because you have been missing out on the newest indie music. Read below for a track by track breakdown and assessment of the album.
This is going up because this is my favorite album right now. I rarely say anymore that I like whole albums but this one is a must buy. Mayer performed the other night at the Roxy in LA and by all accounts that I have read he killed it. I am hoping to catch him in NYC when he swings through in early October because I saw he has a couple events here so everyone should try to make it out to that. I’m serious too about the album, if you listen to just one thing I say all year it should be to buy this album and you won’t regret it.
This is almost a back to back post with his video “Maybe So, Maybe No” and I actually wish it was because I have been listening to the guy ever since I posted that. If you have been following me on Twitter you know I’m loving this guy’s music. Mayer Hawthorne = the new Motown, it really is that simple. He channels that type of music so well and has me going crazy over here for more music. Thanks to my Dad I grew up listening to Motown and I think this is an artist still doing his own thing that would make even my Dad proud.
I had never heard of the Stones Throw artist Mayer Hawthorne before this video but I am really digging this song. The soulful horn loop and the old school overall sound made me really like it. This is a cover and to hear the original song you can click here. Since I knew so little about him and this song I went to his Wikipedia page and found out that his debut album A Strange Arrangement is due to be released Sept. 9th, although I don’t know how reliable that is as a source. I am not sure if it is a must cop yet but I certainly would be interested in hearing more music from him, until then enjoy the video with a bunch of great skating in it.
