Jota Flowers, a.k.a. Jay Electronica, throws down a verse for his remix of “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul” at the same time as Gnarls Barkley’s limited edition release of the Who’s Gonna Save My Soul EP. Originally on The Odd Couple album, the EP has a bunch of different versions of the song and a few other bonus tracks. Jay’s remix is cool but this song is incredible on its own. The video is probably the best music video I have seen this year and is nominated for a Grammy in the Best Short Form Music Video category. Props to OkayPlayer for the remix. Dre makes a comeback on this Kardinal Offishall remix and I was very unimpressed with his verse. I thought his lyrics and flow both were not up to his level. The whole song didn’t appeal to me too much, I thought Kardinal’s verse was OK and the beat was pretty  standard club track with a deep bass drum, synth keys, air horns etc. Pusha T has the best verse on the whole track and really knows how to rock those deep bass drum grooves which actually reminded me of a drum loop I would hear on a Clipse track.

Big Sean joins Kanye on the remix of “Paranoid” and puts down a typically crazy verse. He is one of the wittiest lyrically of the whole new school coming up. I have been trying to stay away from the Kanye news recently but I had to post this up because the young guys need their exposure too. In case your late on Big Sean here are some past posts to catch you up real quick.

Ghostface drops another gem from his album being released Dec. 16th, The Great Ghostdeini. The new album is all unreleased cuts and remixes, and judging by the first two I have heard it is going to be worth getting. “Kilo” is one of my all time favortite Ghostface songs and this is a good remix. I couldn’t believe when I first heard “Kilo” that it was such a simple sounding sample and Ghostface and the producer, MoSS, went and turned it into such a grimey track. That is some crate digging at its finest!

I love when two different genres and artists that I like come together to make a great song. Earlier today I was lucky to have N.A.S.A. bring together David Byrne and Chuck D among others and this afternoon AC decides to remix Chromeo’s song “Momma’s Boy” and does a good job of it. Chromeo is a band I have been listening more and more to recently and I was excited to see my rock and hip-hop worlds colliding. If you click the break you will get the original Chromeo song as well as a live performance featuring them where you have never seen anyone tear up a Vocoder/AutoTune/talkbox/whatever you want to call it like the dude in Chromeo, it will make Kanye weep.

In preparation for Universal Mind Control dropping tomorrow we give you the bonus track from the U.K. version of the album. In the remix, Common swaps out Kanye West for Pharrell and tweaks the overall beat and sound of the song. I’m leaning towards the album version myself, but this isn’t a bad one, especially for a bonus track. Enjoy and go get UMC tomorrow!

The Death of AutoTune: Roger Riley & Teddy Troutman

Roger Riley & Teddy Troutman (get it?) are coming out with an album called Death of the Autotune where they remix classic hip-hop tracks to death with the Autotune and I just got a hold of Black Moon’s “Buck ‘Em Down” and A Tribe Called Quest’s “Electric Relaxation”. Since I am a skeptic of the Autotune craze sweeping every chorus and point of emphasis in rap, I thought this would be a good way to laugh about my frustrations. I couldn’t have been more dead wrong. Instead of laughing at the craziness I found myself actually liking the remixed tracks. Click the break to read more and get the tracks. Read the rest of this entry »
