Samuel remixes and gives a more rock/pop sound to one of Drake’s hits off of his debut album Thank Me Later. Since Drake sings the whole time it sounds similar in that regard but the Knocks have added a funky guitar part in the chorus and a distorted bassline to give it their own touch. Samuel has come a long way since we first featured him on B&B over a year ago with “Say Goodbye”, he recently scored a hit on the internet (according to Hype Machine) with “I Heart NY” and now he is catering to the hip-hop crowd with this remake. I have been waiting on some sort of project from him since the beginning and I still have no word on a release date.
This is a complete blast from the past for me at B&B. I featured Samuel over a year ago on B&B with his song “Say Goodbye” which even got a remix from Darren Hanible. “I Heart NY” will clearly resonate with those of us from or living in the NYC area but I think the overall sound will appeal to those who are into pop music and Samuel would be a dope artist to have on a hook for a hip-hop track. I have no idea if this song is from an album or is another one off single like “Say Goodbye” but it would be dope to here some sort of project form him even if it was only an EP. Darren produced and recorded the song before we had even linked up with him to be artist of the week and said he had first heard it here on B&B. In the interview below he talks about how he doesn’t want to be labeled by one genre and this song helps prove that by showing him branching out and remixing Samuel’s electro-pop song that is one of our recent favorites. Also shout out to Laurel, because I’m not a rapper (thankfully for you all) and few people in NYC know where it is I normally don’t get to shout out my hometown but I found out as we were scheduling the interview that Darren lives there now so I’m glad someone is putting us on the map and thought I would show some love too, if you don’t know, now you know haha… Check out the remix and click the break below to read our interview that we had over the phone on Sunday night. DL: C-Rayz Walz ft. Slug, Samuel, Sum in 16 – In Your Soul I was actually looking for some new music from Samuel since I liked his song so much and came across this track that was released about 3 weeks ago. It has some quality artists with Slug of Atmosphere and Samuel joining C-Rayz for this single off of his album out now titled Who the F%@k Are You? I am glad I decided to do my homework on Samuel because this song is such a nice surprise with a sung chorus, soulful sample, and great verses all the way around. Still hoping to find some more music from him but in the meantime check out this dope track, you will not be disappointed. Shouts to KTP for this song, I am loving it and it is already in the rotation after a couple listens. I do not know much about the artist except this is his first single and he is from New York. I typically latch onto a rock band or two at a time and I have a feeling this song will be up that alley for me. Now all we just need to get more info. and music from them so we can keep up the hype machine.
