Santigold has long been a guilty pleasure of mine since I first heard her “Shove It” remix with Three 6 Mafia and now she is back and teaming up with Karen O. of Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack fame and lead singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The song brings back the repetitious pop rock popularized by Santi and labelmate MIA which in turn influenced bands like Sleigh Bells with their noise pop. I was really happy to see this too, I haven’t had too much to put up besides hip-hop recently and I never want to stray for too long from other genres. Shouts to BlindI for the track and download link.

One of my favorite musical geniuses, David Byrne, teams up with Fatboy Slim for a project that focuses on the life of the First Lady of the Phillipines, Imelda Marcos.
Santigold takes all of the singing for this one and keep an eye out for this album. Grab the link below the break.
The end of the year is upon us and after thinking about it the past few days I decided to put together a few mixes that recapped my year in music. First out the gate is the Hip-Hop Jams mix and it is as many of the songs that I rocked for either a little or long period at some point this year. Besides that, the only other criteria I used was that I tried to only take songs off mixtapes and not albums, for obvious reasons. Due to my computer crash, I was unable to recover all my music so this isn’t everything but it is as accurate as I could get. Enjoy the mix and check back for the second of mix of the trilogy called Hip-Hop Gems. You can grab this download and tracklist below the break.
Here is the newest video from N.A.S.A. off their album Spirit of the Apollo and just like the rest of the videos it is pretty crazy and has an all-star guest features on it. I wonder how many videos they will release for this album? I am not complaining in the least bit but this is at least the 4th video for this album alone and hopefully they keep them coming. N.A.S.A. recently announced their U.S. tour dates too so check after the break to get those and if you haven’t already, GO GET THE ALBUM!
Nando remixes Santigold’s song “Starstruck” very nicely and talks about my favorite food in the world, Maryland crabs (see above). Sike, he actually is talking about being a crab in a bucket which I’m sure a lot of other cities can relate to outside of the DMV, none of the music makes it out because people tear each other apart before it even has the opportunity. For those wondering this will NOT be on the new Nando mixtape coming out sometime soon but I am really enjoying the individual songs he keeps releasing that didn’t quite make the cut. Alright now I got to go eat because I am hungry as poop after talking about crabs. Oh and ha ha ha to all of the UNoriginal people who immediately thought of an STD joke, ever since I went to college and mention crabs to people not from my area everyone turns into a freaking comedian and thinks they have a funny one liner, really, you’re not the first person to think of it and you’re not that funny. Boom, roasted.
This song is off of the SouthernGold mixtape being put together by Terry Urban and Gold Coin and it is due out for free download on June 1st. At first this song sounded like Chip just sampled a Santigold chorus but at the end she comes in with her own verse (sort of) but it still seems cut short. This is probably my favorite song by Chip and I think it has a lot to do with the theme established by Santigold in the chorus and at the beginning of the song. The beat is by Mike Cash and very original with different techno sounds and deep bass loops which complements both of their styles well. Still the most impressive thing for me is still the theme of “Anne’s Plan” which is the common throughout the chorus and Chip’s verses, something hip-hop songs have a hard time doing and often miss.
Santigold switches it up for us and goes for more of a reggae sound with this song and it sounds damn good. The way she was singing and the guitar really reminded me of Gwen Stefani with No Doubt and I mean that in a very complimentary way. After doing some research this song is a year old but I had never heard it so everyone else needs to get their hands on it. This is definitely a good summer track and should make a lot of playlists solely for that reason.

N.A.S.A. continue with the animated videos with the singles from their album Spirit of the Apollo which is out now. The song is a remix of of the original song done by Lykke Li and Santigold (formerly Santogold) and is the great DJing dopeness that is N.A.S.A. Three Legged Legs are the directors and they take you on a trip through space and has an original story behind the animation as do all of their videos. Oh and another Kanye feature, this man is out of control. I feel like the guy in the hotels.com commercial where he starts pouring the shampoo on his head, “It’s working, it’s working” Kanye you got me.
Live performance from Santigold on the Jimmy Fallon show last night. I like the performance and she sounds pretty close to the actual audio of the song. This song is pretty good by itself but I have to admit that I like the 3-6 Mafia remix even more than the original. I haven’t watched Jimmy Fallon yet but it has received mixed reviews from what I have heard. I have never been a big fan of him myself since he always ruined SNL skits by being unable to control his laughing but I have to give any show who has the Roots as their house band a fair shot.
